"Upgrading of Jeddah’s unplanned districts Bani Malek and Al Boghdadiyah Open and Public Areas"

Abstract:

The phenomenon of unplanned settlements is urban communities that grew up in time to different conditions, without any integrated urban planning or planning standards. Therefore, unplanned settlements face major obstacles in terms of urban, economic, social, and environmental features.  Jeddah city has realized the problematic conditions of the many unplanned districts, and concluded to the establishment of Jeddah Development and Urban Regeneration Company (JDURC) to manage the upgrading and development of the city.

This report presents the final design for the project of upgrading and development of two unplanned districts in Jeddah, Bani Malek and Al Boghdadiyah, which JDURC has commissioned Effat University to present a design proposal for the upgrading of the open and public areas of the two districts.

The aim of this commission is to upgrade all open space and public areas located within the development for the two concerned areas (Bani Malek and Al- Boghdadiyah) offering a desirable destination, investing in and catering for the needs of a diverse community, along with making available facilities that offer quality, unique experiences that support family learning; cleanliness, comfort and convenience; and social security. Enhanced safety is required to enable residents, as well as visitors, to coexist safely within the area.

Stage 1: Introductory workshop, general guidelines, data collection, validation and preparation works.
Stage 2: consultant proposals and understanding design for open spaces areas.

Short Profile:

Dr. Mervat El-Shafie, Assistant Professor of Architecture, is the Chair of the Architecture Department in the College of Engineering at Effat University in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Dr. El-Shafie received her Ph.D. in Built-Environment from Lincoln University, New Zealand in 1999. Her thesis entitled “Phenomenology of Built-Environment” deals with the interrelationships between people and their land, houses and places and how this is being affected by the processes of Modernization and Globalization. Dr. Mervat is a registered architect, and she has many architectural works in Egypt since 1980. She has taught Architecture in New Zealand, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia between 1997- 2012, and currently teaches courses in Architecture Design, Landscape Architecture and Research Methods at Effat University. Her research interests include Architecture studies in relation to philosophy, culture and identity; in addition to research on architecture pedagogy and curriculum development
