Abstract:
Concerns are raised on the future awaiting “Jeddah’s heart” the historical area of the city of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia that dates back to more then 1400 years ago.
Brief description of the geological, geographical, and historical origin of Jeddah will be followed by the description of the elements and components of the traditional Jeddah house, building materials such as coral stones and lime plaster, and building methods and components that gave the house its unique shape and character.
Coral stone from the excavated shorelines of the Read Sea was used as the main building material to erect and shape the historical buildings of Jeddah, Yanbo, Rabigh and even Sawakin, the main Sudanese port before Port Sudan. The current condition of the traditional coral stone structures cries for restoration and preservation, yet some of the owners cry to demolish it and rebuild modern structures!
Restoration or Renovation? Why? And How?
The questions will be asked to a random sample of residents, owners, officials and architects. Answers to be documented and displayed. Finally, some highlight will be given on sustainable methods implemented in the historical square kilometer of Jeddah’s heart.
